29. READING FROM PERSPECTIVES (Reading, Collaboration, Discussion, Writing)

Description: Reading from Perspectives is a re-reading strategy that enables students to practice, refine, and increase comprehension skills.

Application: Apply this to subjects such as language arts, social studies, and science.

Process: Find an appropriate reading for the topic that includes various perspectives and have students read the selection for the first time. (With a narrative text, give students a particular character or the narrator.) Group students into teams of three or four and assign each team a different perspective.  Have each group read the passage again, this time looking for statements that reflect the needs and concerns of their assigned perspective and list them.  Direct each team to share their perspective with the whole class and allow time for whole group discussion.  To extend the learning, ask students to create a one to two sentence summary of their perspective as a ticket out the door.
