30. IN-ORDER READING STRATEGY (THIEVES) (Reading, Questioning, Feedback)

Description: Developed by S.L. Manz, the In-Order Reading Strategy uses an acronym, THIEVES, to help students examine the contents of non-fiction work, such as textbook readings, in a thoughtful and deliberate manner.

Application: Review this strategy with students early in the school year.  It can be used for most non-fiction work, most especially for previewing chapters or subsections within a textbook. It can also be used as a homework assignment.

Process: Ask students to explain how they use a textbook to learn. Discuss. With textbooks open, provide the handout, In-Order Reading Strategy (addendum below), and model the process by using a chapter within the textbook.
