32. FORMAL FEEDBACK (Feedback, Discussion, Writing)

Description:  Often avoided because of time constraints, formal feedback inserts a focused structure of the student-teacher conference so both teacher and student make good use of their time.

Application:  Use for specific projects, deadlines, or individual student needs.

Process: Provide students with the overall purpose of the in-class conference and set dates on calendar. Meet with the students two or more times during the course of a project in order for them to adjust and correct problems.  Use the following guidelines when using formal feedback:
  • The teacher should look at student work beforehand.
  • A checklist or feedback form should accompany the work (addendum below).
  • Comments should be specific to the work and elaborated on during the conference.
  • The teacher should focus on two to three items that need work and be prepared to share examples on ways to improve them.
  • Positive feedback should be shared throughout the conference and allow student to ask questions.
  • Student should be able to take the feedback form/checklist with him at the end of the conference to use as a reference in making revisions.
