34. SKIMMING THE TEXT (Reading, Writing, Discussion)

Description: Skimming the Text allows students to become familiar with a reading before there are any expectations of understanding.

Application: This pre-reading method is useful in foreign language class.

Process: Preselect text to use for this activity. In class, allot two to three minutes for students to skim (glance or speed read) the first paragraph or page of the selected text. Emphasize that they should be looking not only for the “who, what, where, how, and why,” but also looking at things like visuals, headings, and distinct vocabulary words.  Instruct them to draw a visual, such as a word bubble graphic organizer, to denote their observations.  Discuss and guide the discussion so that students have a cursory understanding of the text before they are responsible for the contents.
