34. TEAM-PAIR-SOLO (Collaboration, Discussion, Questioning)
Description: This is a collaborative reversal of Think-Pair-Share.
Application: Use for new and difficult material, especially subjects that have large amounts of unfamiliar vocabulary/processes like foreign language, mathematics, or science.
Process: Introduce new material with direct instruction. Create several problems based on the new material and show students how to solve at least one. Group students into teams of four and allow them to solve at least two problems, encouraging them to think out loud. Share answers. Mix students again and place in pairs, repeating process. Separate partners, give each student problems to solve, starting in class and finishing for homework. At the next class meeting, review student work and discuss challenges of solving difficult problems alone.
