35. LIMITATION ELIMINATION (Questioning, Discussion)

Description: Limitation Elimination is an empowerment technique used to stop students from negative or limiting thoughts.

Application: Use when students put up mental barriers to learning.

Process: Gently confront negative thinking by using the following devices:
  • Challenging limiting belief: When students use language that limits thinking or actions, use questions such as “Why do you think that?” “Do you really believe it?” “Who else believes that?” “What if you believed something different?”
  • Finding exceptions to extremism: When students do not want to answer questions, they make comments in the extreme such as “Nobody did the homework!”  Try a response like “Is there anybody (other than Suzie) who hasn't done the homework?”
  • Moving from impossibilities to action: When students are unmotivated or they are afraid to fail, they tend to operate in impossibilities such as “We just don’t have the time!” Push beyond the limits by suggesting action, “What if we could find another person to help?” or “What if we just did it anyway?”
