36. PROVOCATIVE RIDER (Questioning, Discussion)

Description:  Similar to Tag Questioning, the Provocative Rider is a questioning technique that usually elicits an emotional response.

Application: Apply this teacher technique when students seem to be disengaged with the topic.

Process: Ask students a question and follow up with the provocative rider such as “Who must register for Selective Service (the question)?  I am told that all women must register as well (the rider).”  “Which group wrote this science lab report?  Did they even look at the result of the tests?”
