37. COLLABORATIVE WRITING CIRCLE (Collaboration, Writing, Feedback)

Description:  Most writing activities are completed by individual students.  In the Collaborative Writing Circle, groups explore narrative genres through the written word.

Application: Use this activity in advanced foreign language or language arts classes.

Process: Start the creative writing activity by brainstorming a list of various narrative genres (news article, romance, conversation, fairytale, sci-fi, etc.)  Put students into groups of five or six and ask each within the group to choose a genre he would like to use for his writing, keeping the features of the genre in mind. Instruct students to write the first paragraph of a narrative in their genre. At the designated time, tell them to pass the papers clockwise, read the paragraph and write the next paragraph, in their own genre. Continue the process until the story reaches the original writer who finishes the story by writing the last paragraph.  Select one or two groups to read their stories, pausing to allow students from other groups to identify the genre used for each paragraph written.  Clarify any misconceptions, if necessary.
