39. DIVIDE & CONQUER: CARTOON REVIEW (Writing, Feedback)

Description: Cartoon Review provides students with a method to examine political cartoons in depth.

Application: This technique will help students who have trouble understanding political cartoons, as well as students who tend to look at cartoons superficially.

Process: Select political cartoons that strengthen understanding of a topic or period of history.  Ask students to look at the entire cartoon first and then divide the cartoon into four sections. Tell students to circle and identify the visual symbols and interpret the meaning of the symbols in each section. (Instruct them to read all dialogue first and proceed to describe the action taking place in the cartoon.)  From the close examination of the cartoon, require students to write a paragraph explaining the cartoon’s meaning.
