52. INTERACTIVE WORD WALL (Writing, Feedback)
Description: A word wall is a systematically organized collection of words on a wall or other large display place in the classroom. Students are tasked to interact with a posted word wall in order to deepen understanding of critical vocabulary.
Application: The Interactive Word Wall transitions the traditionally mundane word wall into something dynamic and rigorous. Use this activity as a class starter, a stop point during a lecture, or a review.
Process: Construct or have students create word wall making sure the words are large enough for students to see them easily, and as unit of study progresses, add terms. Activity 1: Make sentences: When there are enough words on the wall, direct students to create coherent sentences incorporating as many terms in one sentence as possible. Activity 2: Clue: Using the word wall as a backdrop, give students clues to a particular word on the wall, broad to more specific, with students eventually creating the clues to play. Activity 3: BINGO: Hand out Bingo cards (Addendum E) and tell students to fill in terms randomly. Instead of using the term, give a clue to the term. Remind students that the first card that has five in a row, wins. Activity 4: Word Search: Have students create a word search with at least ten terms and tell them to use clues (definitions) instead of the word itself.
