56. READIN’ WRITIN’ ROTATIN’ (Writing, Collaboration, Feedback)

Description: This protocol combines a jigsaw and 3-2-1 activity together in order to maximize learning.

Application: Use this protocol to keep students actively engaged when processing a lot of information.

Process: Introduce the topic that will be covered in class.  With predetermined parameters, such as dividing the topic into subtopics, ask students to individually create a large graphic organizer, newspaper, word web, etc. on poster paper and submit. Check for accuracy.  Next class, group students into pairs or trios and return graphic organizers to students. Explain that each group of students will review and create a 3-2-1 (three things learned, two interesting facts, and one question about the organizer) for each organizer in a set amount of time, five to ten minutes for each rotation. Make clear that the graphic organizers are rotating rather than students. After all organizers have been reviewed, elicit classroom discussion of the 3-2-1’s and collect.
