72. SELECT-A-SOLUTION (Writing, Reading, Discussion)

Description: This math protocol stimulates critical thinking in a whole class setting.

Application: Use when the process of understanding how to reach a solution to a word problem is more important than the actual answer.

Process: Before students receive instruction on a new concept, give them a word problem and provide three possible solutions with one being correct. They are to: 1) read the problem; 2) examine the given solutions with accompanying work; 3) choose the solution that best solves the problem and write an explanation for their choice; and 4) discuss.
