13. INTELLIGENT INTERRUPTIONS (Questioning, Discussion, Writing)

Description: Intelligent Interruptions is an interactive lecture activity which keeps students actively engaged during lecture.

Application: Use this activity when instructional content is informational.

Process: Prepare lecture notes before class meeting. On class day, tell students to take notes during lecture.  Set a timer for a random period of time, three to eight minutes in length. When the timer sounds, announce to students a thirty second preparation time to review their notes and be prepared to summarize key points, to ask a question about the lecture thus far, or to apply information by giving an example.  Remind students that their “interruptions” should last no longer than one minute.  Acknowledge and/or clarify student’s response and re-set timer and repeat process again using another student to “interrupt.”
