15. ROUND ROBIN ROLE PLAY (Reading, Collaboration, Discussion)
Description: Role Play is an effective way for students to gain deeper understanding of text.
Application: Adding the element of round robin, this role play activity is best used for long articles or text that may have more than one section.
Process: Before students come to class, label four note cards with the group roles and their definitions:
Summarizer: highlights key ideas in the article
Questioner: poses questions about the article
Clarifier: addresses the confusing parts of the article and answers questions posed by the questioner
Predictor: makes guesses about where the article is going next
Form students into groups of four. Give each student a note card that identifies his role in the group. Have students read a few paragraphs of the article and ask them to take notes on post-its as they prepare for their role. Once they have finished reading, have students play their roles in the discussion. Review the procedure: the Summarizer begins the discussion by highlighting the key ideas at this point of the article; the Questioner then poses questions about the selection and the Clarifier attempts to answer the questions; and the Predictor will attempt to guess where the article is going for the next section. Once this has occurred, tell students to shift their card to the right, assume a new role, read another section of the article, and repeat the process. Once the article has been thoroughly examined, debrief the process, as well as discuss contents of the article.
