16. MAKING MEANING OF THE READING (Reading, Discussion, Questioning)
Description: Based on Daniel Baron’s The Making Meaning Protocol, this process enhances student accountability for comprehension and elaboration of content.
Application: Make use of this protocol when class discussion of a reading is desired.
Process: Select reading and tell students to make brief notes on noteworthy parts. Once finished, ask students, “What do you see?” Encourage them to provide answers without judging superfluous elements such as quality of text or personal preference. Next, ask students “What questions does this reading raise for you?” Wait for answers, always encouraging students to dig deeper. Tell students to speculate on the meaning of the reading by asking, “What is significant about this text?” Be ready to encourage inferential thinking, as well as point out problems, issues, and insights the reading contains. Finally, invite students to write a reflection piece that makes a relevant connection between the student and the reading.
