17. FOLDABLE FLOWCHARTS (Collaboration, Discussion)
Description: A foldable flowchart combines elements to create a product that requires analysis and perspective of order and/or time.
Application: Use this approach as a way to bring interest to such mundane tasks as putting events into chronological order or inserting instructions in a step-by-step process.
Process: Have each element of a flowchart or timeline separated and in strips on paper measuring 2” x 8.5” or display jumbled elements on board and ask students to copy one element per strip. Form pairs and direct them to add facts about the element on the strips of paper with at least two additional bits of information per strip. Place the elements in the natural order that they occur and once finished, consult with another pair. If both pairs have the same order, tell students to tape the small ends together from beginning to end and then to fold the strips into an accordion. Review the order of the flowchart/timeline and discuss challenges that the pairs faced. After activity, remind students to place flowchart into interactive notebook or portfolio for reference.
