18. INTERACTIVE READING (Reading, Discussion)
Description: This protocol helps ensure that students are engaged in silent reading.
Application: Use when students are asked to read silently in class or at home.
Process: Select a reading and pass it out to students. Direct them to underline information that is most important, “X” information that they feel has little value in understanding the reading, and question mark passages that need further clarification. Once finished, tell students to compare their readings with a neighbor and, in whole class discussion, share findings. If there are commonalities of confusion among students, explain.
