25. GROUP EDIT FOR LANGUAGE (Feedback, Collaboration, Writing)
Description: According to Senora Bush, Foreign Language teacher, “Group editing in a foreign language class allows students to work together in order to improve written work by employing a “fresh set of eyes.” “
Application: This protocol is specifically designed for a foreign language class but can be adapted to most subjects.
Process: For homework give students a writing assignment. On class day, group students into teams of four or five and arrange each group into a circle. Have students pass their original written work to their neighbor on the right. Give students a list of errors to focus on such as:
1. Subject-Verb Agreement
2. Adjectives - Match in Gender/Number
3. Connector Words (also called "useful words and phrases")
4. Spelling and Accents
Review the overall directions for the activity: 1) In round one, each neighbor in the circle reads through his peer's paper looking only for the first error on the list (Subject-Verb Agreement); 2) Once everyone finishes reading through their peer's paper, the group points out errors they found to each other (no marking necessary); 3) Once each partner communicates any errors he found pertaining to error #1 on the list, the group passes their papers to the right again; 4) This time they read through but focus on the error #2 on the list (Adjectives - Match in Gender/Number); and 5) Students repeat this until all errors on the list have been searched for and communicated. Return students to their seat and have them make corrections that their group discovered and submit. (An optional approach is that editors mark papers with color corrections, i.e. red for Subject-Verb Agreement, blue for Adjectives, etc.)
