28. INTERACTIVE CROSSWORD PUZZLE (Questioning, Collaboration, Discussion)
Description: The Interactive Crossword Puzzle is popular in foreign language classes because students must communicate in the target language.
Application: Prepare puzzles for most foreign language courses. This format can be modified for other subjects.
Process: Design a crossword based on the topic’s vocabulary. Do not make a list of clues. Once the crossword grid is complete, make two copies; label one “Student A” and fill in only the “Across” answers and label the other “Student B” and fill in only the “Down” answers. Make enough copies of both versions so that there are equal numbers distributed. On class day, draw a two-word example crossword on the whiteboard (two copies, one on each side of the board, with half the words filled in on each), and use this to explain the activity: two people work together; each has a different sheet; they can't show the sheet to their partner or say the word; instead they must use their target language to explain it. Pair students, hand out the copies, and begin the activity. Circulate to ensure students are using the target language.
