28. SHRINKLIT (Writing, Feedback, Discussion)

Description: Shrinklit is a clever protocol that uses poetry as a summarization tool. It will help students build connections, discover new ideas, and promote higher-level thinking.

Application: Once modeled, use Shrinklit in-class or as homework.

Process: Have an article, piece of literature, or short story for this activity. Assign students a portion of the work (or entire work, depending on length). Tell them to write a poem that focuses on the main ideas in the assigned piece and to create a poem of at least ten lines. Reiterate to students that they must use figurative language (alliteration, personification, similes, etc.)  Once completed, allow students to get into small groups and share poems.
