30. BROWN BAG COMPETITION (Discussion, Collaboration)
Description: This fun activity combines two protocols, Brown-Bag-It and Criss-Cross-Cross-Out. It is fast paced and has a friendly competition element that keeps students engaged.
Application: The Brown Bag Competition game is a great way to introduce, present, or review a topic.
Process: Have a topic in mind and arrange students into groups of three or four. Hand out one standard paper bag and a small stack of (2” x 3” size) paper to each group. Instruct students that when the topic is announced, each student will write a person, place, thing, or idea that is connected and is particular to the topic, one per paper and place into the brown bag. After three to five minutes, stop students and take away all unused paper. Tell students that each group will examine their papers, sorting and classifying as appropriate, combining doubles/triples as they continue to sort. After two to three minutes stop students and direct a team to call out their terms to all students, emphasizing that if another group also has the term, papers from all groups will be discarded. Repeat the process with the next group. After all of the groups have shared, ask which group had the most unique/particular terms and declare them the winner of the competition.
