34. RIGOROUS RESPONSE (Writing, Discussion)
Description: Students are given a reading assignment and then must produce a constructed response that mimics a state final exam response.
Application: This is an advanced activity for subject courses with assigned readings.
Process: Find a reading that can be used for constructed response skill building and create a document that looks like the actual state Final Exam constructed response section. For each student, hand out two colored pencils and the constructed response look-alike and allow enough time for students to thoughtfully respond. At a designated time, start the discussion with the question of “How many things does the question ask you to do?” Once that question is answered, have students switch papers. Tell students to read the constructed response and determine how successful the student was in answering the question and then to use a blue pencil to circle the “best answer” within the response, and with a green pencil, circle the part of the student answer that may be inadequate or confusing. Have students turn in and close with class discussion.
