35. HOMEWORK HELP BOARD (Feedback, Writing, Discussion, Questioning)
Description: Originally designed for math class, this routine allows students to review and correct homework in a non-threatening manner. It also allows teachers to determine gaps in learning and reteach immediately.
Application: As a consistent warm-up, the Homework Help Board is used the day after homework has been assigned. It can be used in most subjects, especially math.
Process: At the beginning of class, ask students to quickly review homework, note which problems presented difficulty and write the numbers on the board. In an orderly manner, direct students who believe that they have successfully answered problems to write solution on the board. If there are conflicting answers, allow the alternative solution to also be posted on board. Use questioning strategies to clarify any missteps. If a problem has no solution, suggest a first step and guide the thought process to finding a solution. Move on to the day’s lesson.
