38. IN-DEPTH INQUIRY (Questioning, Discussion, Feedback)
Description: Based on “Pose, Pause, Bounce, Pounce,” this popular protocol steers away from the traditional questioning technique of IRE (initiation, response, evaluation) by promoting a holistic approach to inquiry.
Application: Make use of this inquiry protocol when seeking quality answers from students.
Process: Before class meets, prepare a variety of open-ended questions. On class day, inform students that the day’s questioning technique does not include raising hands. Pose a reflective question. Pause by asking the class to “hold the thought, think, and think again.” After sufficient time, name student “A” and be ready to deal with any comments, answers, groans, etc. Be prepared to wait for an answer, but if it is obvious student A is struggling, encourage others to give clues. When student A does answer, instantly ask student B his opinion of student A’s answer. Bring in student C if there is a possibility of teasing out more information. Continue to tease until answers have led to understanding. Repeat process with different questions and students to answer.
