38. OUR TOP TEN LIST (Discussion, Questioning)
Description: This fun activity gets students thinking, talking, and collaborating by inquiry.
Application: Our Top Ten List can be used as an icebreaker.
Process: Divide students into groups of four or five by having them number off. (Do this because students generally sit with others they already know best.) Tell the newly-formed groups that their assignment is to find ten things they have in common with every other person in the group and that have nothing to do with school. Instruct students that they may not use body parts or clothing (everyone has eyes, legs and wears shoes/pants) as commonalities. Tell the groups that one person must take notes and be ready to read their list to the whole group upon completion of the activity. To keep the activity to 10-15 minutes total, tell the groups, after seven minutes, that the lists they have created are perfect, no matter how many items they have. Ask each group to share its whole list with the entire group. (This tends to bring more laughter into the activity.)
