39. NOT YET TEST (Feedback, Discussion)
Description: Based on Bloom’s Mastery Learning concept and Dweck’s Growth Mindset Theory, the Not Yet Test gives students incentive to reflect and to work toward mastery of the assessed material.
Application: The Not Yet Test can be used at the teacher’s discretion for formal or informal tests and quizzes.
Process: Create multiple tests making sure that test items and objectives align. Before test administration, explain the passing (mastery) standard and that the consequences of not meeting the standard will be re-teaching and retesting. For students who met mastery, but want to improve, provide enrichment opportunities. Schedule the first test for all students to take. After grading and passing back test, announce the date and time (usually before or after school during a scheduled tutoring time) for the re-teaching or enrichment and retesting. Repeat, if necessary, but increase the re-teaching element accordingly. Move on when the curriculum demands but continue to work with students who must meet mastery.
