39. THE TAPN APPROACH (Reading, Questioning, Writing)
Description: The TAPN Approach is a pre-reading instructions method that motivates students to interact with text in a more deliberate manner. It was developed by Jim Peterson of Alpha Mind Coaching.
Application: Apply this to subjects such as language arts, social studies, and science
Process: Assign an appropriate length reading and be specific in instructions to students using the TAPN Approach:
Time: Be specific on how much time students have to read. (Countdown clock energizes students.)
Amount: Tell students exactly what they will read. (The workload should be challenging, but not overwhelming.)
Public: Let students know that they will share their knowledge with classmates. (Knowing their work will likely be made
public raises the stakes and increases students' level of concern.)
Novelty: Change minor requirements anytime the Approach is used such as highlighting text for one assignment or
answering questions in another. (Small variations in the academic routine arouse student interest.)
