4. THREE LEVELS OF TEXT (Reading, Discussion)
Description: This awesome protocol allows students to clarify, reflect, and expand thinking from text in increasingly specific descriptions.
Application: Use Three Levels of Text for students to explore, summarize, review, and/or reflect on text.
Process: Select the text and have markers and poster board ready. Divide the students into groups of four, five, or six and tell them to read the text selection, taking notes throughout. Announce that each member of the group shares a sentence from the text or from his notes about something that struck him as particularly important. (Others listen, take notes.) Emphasize to students that this is a time to share and not discuss. After about ten minutes tell them that each student shares a phrase from the text or from notes written about the text that is significant. Repeat the same process, but instead of a sentence or a phrase, use one word that each member of the group found noteworthy. After sharing within groups, turn all attention to poster board and facilitate whole class discussion of key take-aways.
