40. CODING TEXT (Reading, Writing, Discussion, Collaboration)
Description: This is an active reading method that allows students to mark their own thinking as they read through a text.
Application: Apply the Coding Text strategy to all content areas and a variety of texts, adjusting the code accordingly.
Process: With content in mind, create a text code key and present it in the form of a handy bookmark (addendum below). Give each student a bookmark, explain the process, and model it by using a small portion of the text. Reassure students that not everyone will mark text in the same way as prior knowledge and/or experiences will vary markings. Allow students to practice the process by silently reading the text and marking the text with codes. (If using bound documents, distribute sticky notes for students to use.) Place them in small groups to discuss their marks. After a predetermined amount of time, break groups up and engage in a whole class discussion, clarifying or emphasizing critical points of the reading.
