43. WORD ASSOCIATION (Discussion, Writing)

Description:  This quick protocol helps students explore the breadth of an area creating points of discussion.

Application: Use Word Association as an icebreaker and/or introduction or review of a topic.

Process: Select a topic and create a list of associated terms.  Set up two PowerPoint slides: slide one has the topic only and slide two has the topic and terms.  Group students (pairs or trios work best) and tell them to take out a sheet of paper, one per group, and when slide one is displayed to write terms that are associated with the topic.  Set a time limit, one or two minutes. After time is called, direct the students to share their answers with a neighboring group, adding and deleting terms as appropriate. Display slide two and guide the discussion, emphasizing and de-emphasizing particular terms of the topic.
