Description: A popular social media tool, a hashtag focuses on the key words, thoughts, or ideas of an article or posting on the Internet. #Humble #Hashtags is a non-tech activity that allows students to use the hashtag concept as a summarization exercise in class.
Application:, #Humble #Hashtags activity is used to check for student understanding of a concept, topic, or event. This can be used as an in-class or homework assignment.
Process: Review the purpose of the hashtag and introduce the idea of #humble #hashtags. Set particular guidelines: hashtags have the symbol “#” in front of the hashtag and must be “one word.” (If more than one word is used, they must be together, e.g., #I Love School is #ILoveSchool.) Hand out one sheet of copy paper to each student and instruct them to fold, cut or tear the paper in half lengthwise. Assign reading and tell students to create two hashtags based on the reading using the half sheets. Remind them to be ready to present and explain their hashtags to the entire class. Post relevant hashtags in classroom as a word wall.
