48. GET THE GIST? (Writing, Feedback, Questioning)
Description: Based on the work of Frey, Fisher, and Hernandez, GIST Summaries require students to pare down information into a twenty word summary. The process helps students better comprehend content material.
Application: Apply the GIST Summary method when students must analyze and evaluate information.
Process: Find a short piece of text and divide into four or five sections. Make sure that the sections are logically divided and that STOP is written at the end of each section. On class day, distribute text and review the process: read a portion of the text, stop, and then write a summarizing statement for each portion. Tell students that they will have a concise summary of the entire text. Hand out the Gist Template (Addendum below) and instruct students to fill out the entire template. Once complete pair students and direct them to compare and contrast the twenty words selected by each student and have a posted teacher-prepared example for students to compare. Discuss in a whole class setting and ask for justification of word choices.
