49. CONSCIENCE ALLEY (Discussion)
Description: Often used in drama classes, Conscience Alley (www.DramaResouce.com) is a highly engaging technique to spur classroom talk when decision making is critical.
Application: A useful technique for exploring any kind of dilemma faced by a character(s), providing an opportunity to analyze a decisive moment in greater detail.
Process: Form students into two lines, standing up and facing each other. Tell them that one student will represent a character that needs advice about a “dilemma.” Present the problem to the class (Ex. Should President Lincoln allow South Carolina to secede from the Union?) and direct the student in character to silently walk between the two lines as each member speaks (or whispers) his advice. To make certain all ideas have been presented, organize the lines to ensure that those on one side give opposing advice to those on the other.
