51. TALKING CHIPS (Discussion, Questioning, Collaboration)
Description: Talking Chips is a protocol that emphasizes 100% participation in group discussion.
Application: Use this simple strategy as a way to prevent certain students from dominating discussion as well as for students who are reluctant to speak up.
Process: Assign students into groups of four and hand out a “chip” to each participant within the group. Pose a question to the groups or have different questions on cards faced down at the center of the table. Once the first question has been asked, tell each student that a chip must be placed in the center for the privilege to answer (and all others remain silent) and that he cannot talk again until all other chips have been used. Allow groups to decide if a student does not have anything to share on a particular question, he may be allowed to pass. Remind students that when all the chips are down, students will retrieve their chip and start over with the next question.
