51. USING TECH: MODERN LEARNING LOGS (Writing, Feedback, Discussion)
Description: Based on a blog post in Education Week, Modern Learning Logs fully embrace technology as the vehicle for on-going student collections of work.
Application: Use in any subject.
Process: Find a dynamic platform for students to use, such as Edmodo or Evernote (Basic is free). Keep in mind that electronic learning logs must:
Make sure students understand the format, trust the process, and are regularly accountable for posting their work. Although there should be a predetermined format for posting, encourage students to be innovative in their posts, using not only the written word, but tools such as audio and graphic images as well. Provide a space of conversation between teacher and student for questions and comments as this raises the level of concern. Monitor and adjust the process and be consistent throughout the term. Review the example log below.

- be electronic and multi-platform (usable on laptops, tablets, and smartphones).
- be able to support various media like photos and audio that allow for the use of hyperlinks.
- facilitate communication and collaboration between relevant stakeholders.
- be editable with real time auto-save and an activity log—modern learning does not happen in a static environment, so the log should be designed for easy amending.
- catalog and connect several running documents—for teachers and students to share—that trace learning across various time periods and varied experiences.
