54. DEBATE CIRCLES (Feedback, Discussion)
Description: Debate Circles get students up and out of their seats while the teacher informally evaluates student thinking and uncovers their understandings and misconception.
Application: Use as an informal assessment of student learning.
Process: Have all students form a large circle in the classroom. Make a statement that requires students to choose a side. Instruct them to divide into two smaller circles each representing one of the opposing opinions. Provide time for groups to formulate their talking points. Listen to the student discussions within the circles and assess their understanding. At a specified time, direct them to reform their circles into lines, facing one another. Encourage students to express their ideas, emphasizing certain points to promote understanding.
