55. ANALOGY PROMPTS (Feedback, Discussion, Writing)
Description: Analogies are often used to explain something that may be difficult to understand. In this quick activity, students create analogies to explain a selected topic, concept, or process.
Application: Use as an informal assessment to judge the depth of a student’s critical thinking.
Process: Have a topic, concept, or process in mind before beginning this activity and review the technique of writing analogies with students, citing examples. Direct students to use the following format: (A selected topic, concept, or process) is like ________________ because_________________________________. Announce a time limit of three to five minutes and monitor the students’ progress as they write. At specified time, ask students to share their analogies and be prepared to challenge students whose analogies are flawed.
