60. FOREIGN LANGUAGE WORD ASSOCIATION (Discussion, Feedback)
Description: This game activates prior knowledge to make connections between words.
Application: Perfect for increasing vocabulary in the target language, use word associations at the end of a unit or topic of study.
Process: Have a topic in mind before beginning the game. Tell students the object and the rules of the game: 1) Object of the game is to associate words in the target language. 2) Students stand and form two equal lines facing each other. 3) Teacher begins game by saying a word in the target language and calls the name of the student to the right. 4) Student must quickly answer with an associated word. If the association is not clear, the student must quickly explain its meaning. If the association is not valid, student must return to his seat. If the association is valid, the student to the left must make an association with the word the student to the right (not the teacher’s word). 5) The process will repeat until the last student is standing or another word is presented by the teacher and the game begins again.
