65. SUPERLATIVES (Writing, Discussion, Collaboration, Feedback)
Description: Superlatives is an interactive lecture format in which students are required to be careful listeners in order to participate in the classroom discussion.
Application: Use the Superlatives protocol as a way to hold students accountable for notetaking during lecture, video, or other formats.
Process: Make sure students know how to take notes before starting this activity. Put students into pairs, hand out one white board per pair, but tell them to set it aside momentarily and take notes on paper individually during the presentation. Begin lecture and at a logical stopping point (six or seven minutes) ask pairs to identify the most important piece of information that was presented thus far, discuss within the partnership and write their decision on the white board and display when instructed. Discuss students’ choices. Repeat this process of lecture, note-taking, teamwork on the white board, and discussion using other superlative stems that fit the content of the lecture: most radical, most surprising, least interesting, the best, the worst etc. for peer review
