74. ALTERNATIVE ENDINGS (Writing, Reading, Discussion)
Description: In this fun and fanciful protocol, students create an alternative ending to a short story or historical event prompted by the question “What if . . .?”
Application: Use this creative writing method in language arts or history classes.
Process: Locate a reading, article, or other type of text that has a definitive ending. Delete the ending portion at a place that gives enough information but does not point to the outcome. Hand out text and direct students to read and, once finished, write an outcome or ending. At a specified time, ask students to turn to a neighbor and share their endings with each other. In a whole class setting, prompt one or two students to share. When finished, read the real outcome/ending and discuss.
