79. PLAN STRATEGY (Writing, Reading)
Description: The PLAN Strategy helps students organize text and can be used during and after reading.
Application: Apply PLAN when processing informational and literary text in most subjects.
Process: Select text prior to class meeting and print one copy per student or in an e-document that can be edited. Provide a graphic organizer the first few times students use the strategy, and then allow students to create their own as they become adept at using it. 1) Ask students to briefly scan the text and make predictions about it. 2) Have them locate known information by placing checks or unknown information with question marks throughout the reading. 3) Instruct students to review predictions and add new information. Emphasize the importance of the add step. 4) Assign students a task (essay, discussion, etc.) that will note and subsequently prove their understanding.
